Friday Night

Gary left for Hawai’i early Wednesday morning. I talked my colleague into going to the airport with me so that we could go to Village Creek Drying ponds after dropping dropping Gary off. I knew it was going to be a good day of birding because as soon as we got there some nice guy told us to look into his scope and see a Great Horned Owl nest with baby owlets. Very cool. Most of my photos turned out horrible, but this one was OK. We stayed a couple hours and saw these species:

Gadwall
American Wigeon
Mallard
Northern Shoveler
Northern Pintail
Green-winged Teal
Lesser Scaup
Hooded Merganser
Pied-billed Grebe
Great Blue Heron
Turkey Vulture
Red-shouldered Hawk
Red-tailed Hawk
Killdeer
Greater Yellowlegs
Least Sandpiper
Bonaparte’s Gull
Mourning Dove
Great Horned Owl
Downy Woodpecker
Purple Martin
Carolina Wren
Hermit Thrush
American Robin
Savannah Sparrow
Song Sparrow
White-crowned Sparrow
Northern Cardinal
Red-winged Blackbird
Rusty Blackbird

Gary got to his place safely and we’ve talked a few times–he may be overseas, but it is till America so our cell phones work great. A colleague posted on Facebook this photo of Gary giving his first lecture today:

In other news, Sarah had a rough week and spent a couple nights in the hospital. Please keep praying for her and baby Emma. A week from tomorrow we will go there ourselves. We’re looking forward to that. Which reminds me, we’ve got stuff to do before then, like do our taxes and find someone to look after our house, and find someone to take us to the airport and someone to take Rachel to the airport since she is on a different flight, etc., etc.
